I first picked up this timely book when it was released. Rick Rubin is a highly respected and awarded music producer. Over the years, his creative intelligence has gained a very wide and appreciative audience. I highly recommend this book if you are either living a creative life or would desire to. One class I teach is “Photography: Developing a Creative Vision.” Rubin, however, teaches us to develop a creative mind. Below are a few of his thinkings…. Enjoy!

  • Living life as an artist is a practice.
    You are either engaging in the practice
    or you’re not.
  • All that matters is that you are making something you love, to the best of your ability, here and now.
  • In terms of priority, inspiration comes first. You come next. The audience comes last.
  • A river of material flows through us. When we share our works and our ideas, they are replenished. If we block the flow by holding them all inside, the river cannot run and new ideas are slow to appear.
  • Look for what you notice but no one else sees.
  • As artists, we seek to restore our childlike perception: a more innocent state of wonder and appreciation not tethered to utility or survival.
